Condo Head Hilton

By Shawn Kosloff

When most people think of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina their thoughts naturally turn to its white sand beaches and lush green golf courses. With over twelve miles of beaches and 30 championship golf courses, it’s the Low Country’s own version of “surf and turf”. But there’s a lot more to do in this vacation paradise than sunning yourself on the beach and playing a round or two of golf.

Hilton Head also features some of the finest shopping in South Carolina. With its upscale shops and boutiques, both Shelter Cove Harbour and Harbour Town are favorites among locals and tourists. And why not? After a round of shopping you can enjoy lunch, dinner, or your favorite libation at an open-air café while taking in the sites and sounds of the yachts in the harbour. You can also take a few minutes drive over the bridge onto the mainland and the town of Bluffton. There you will found two outlet malls with over 100 famous brand stores to choose from.

Hilton Head Island also offers a number of outdoor, family-friendly activities for kids of all ages. You can get up close and personal with the local wildlife (although we recommend keeping your distance from the alligators!) by taking a dolphin watch cruise, nature boat cruise, or even just walking along the beaches and lagoons. If you prefer to be more than a sightseer, can also take one of the many deep sea fishing charters, rent a kayak, canoe, or boat and take to the water yourself. Landlubbers can rent a bikes almost anywhere on the Island and ride over 60 miles of bike trails throughout the main roads and resort plantations.

Of course, your vacation wouldn’t be complete if you weren’t spoiled and pampered for at least part of your trip. Most of the larger hotels have their own day spa on site, or you can visit one of the many day spas on the Island. Another benefit of staying at one of the larger hotels is that most have seasonal Kid’s Clubs that allow you to break away for an afternoon or the entire day while the children partake in fun filled summer activities.

While your children are kept busy at Kid’s Camp you can sneak away for a round of championship golf. Imagine yourself playing a round of golf with names like Nicklaus, Palmer, and Player. While you may never actually get to play a round with Jack, Arnie, and Gary, you can walk in their footsteps on one of their signature courses here on the Island. Many of the local hotels offer golf packages at nearby courses, but why be locked into one or two golf clubs in the vicinity of the hotel? Your best bet is to make your own tee times and play the courses that you want to play.

If you have never been to Hilton Head Island, you’re in for a treat. While most oceanfront resorts blind you with neon lights and tourist traps, the master plan of Hilton Head dictates that all structures must blend in with the natural surroundings. You’re left to enjoy a relaxing, peaceful vacation in the natural beauty of the South Carolina Low Country.
